Taylor worked in cutting edge materials such as stainless steel and acrylic Plexiglas (he’s said to be the first to apply these materials to such a craft), and in 1948 he added a retail magic store to his Merv Taylor Magic Company manufacturing shop in North Hollywood. “Taylor is a former Los Angeles schoolteacher who became interested in magic and left his school work to build the largest magic manufacturing plant in the world,” a contemporary news article said. Taylor combined a new passion for stage illusion and his manufacturing expertise to pioneer the making of high-quality stage magician’s props. “Taylor” was Merv Taylor, who had taught art, mechanical drawing, electric shop, and metal craft but in 1940 a magician performing at his school took a broken prop to Merv to fix, which sparked his interest in magic. Not on Main Street, USA, but in Fantasyland, Merlin’s Magic Shop premiered adjacent to Sleeping Beauty Castle on July 17, 1955, under license to a firm called Taylor & Hume. On the opening day of Disneyland, a magic shop opened-but it’s probably not the one that you might think of. Unfortunately the toilet facilities are also located downstairs and so not accessible. Carnival of Curiosities and 8 Years Later are situated in the basement and therefore not accessible. HAYMARKET: The building is accessible from the street and our Ocean’s Escape game is on the ground floor and fully accessible. It is inside Game of Throwing, our axe throwing venue, opposite Odeon cinema and Sainsbury’s. MORRISON STREET: Our Morrison Street site is at the top end of Morrison Street, close to the junction with Lothian Road. Take the left fork up Dalry Road and you will find us on the right hand side just before the British Heart Foundation furniture shop. Head straight on along Shandwick Place and keep going until the major junction where the road forks at Haymarket (the name of street you are on will change a few times). It is also easily walkable from the West End of Princes Street. HAYMARKET: Our Haymarket site is 2 minutes up Dalry Road from Haymarket Station. How do I travel to Escape via public transport or on foot? Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult as part of the group in the room. While there is no restriction on age, the puzzles may be too demanding for those under 10.
